Types Of Emotions
Robert Plutchik defined eight primary emotions: anger, anticipation, joy, acceptance, fear, surprise, sadness, and disgust. These "primary" emotions, much like primary colors and can be blended to create new emotions, or secondary emotions. According to Plutchik's work, the primary emotions are, "Submission, awe, disappointment, remorse, contempt, aggressiveness, optimism, and love."(25) As Woody meets Buzz in Toy Story, he shows primary emotions, such as anger, fear, and surprise. These emotions quickly combine and form aggressiveness in Woody. Woody has trouble accepting Buzz and then finds himself fighting every second to make sure that Buzz does not replace him.
Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy
Albert Ellis proposed a series of steps we use to rationalize and overcome our debilitative emotion. According to Albert Ellis' work, rational emotive behavior therapy includes, "An activating event, irrational belief, emotional consequences, dispute the belief, effective new thinking, and new feeling."(26) Woody goes through this process from the beginning to the end of Toy Story. First, there has to be an activating event, or something that is bothersome. For Woody, this happens to be Buzz arriving.
An irrational belief is then formed. Woody believes that Buzz is going to replace Woody. Emotional consequences then occur. Anger, frustration, fights, and attempts to get rid of Buzz lead Woody and Buzz to Syd's house and they are in huge trouble.
The belief is then disputed. Woody realizes that Buzz only believed he was a space ranger and never meant any harm to Woody. Effective new thinking somewhere along the lines of, "Buzz is my friend and we have to work together." might have run through Woody's head. The new feeling can now be embraced. Woody and Buzz officially become a dynamic duo.
